There are many types of templates available for analysis that healthcare executives often use. One common model is a health IT department’s benchmarking framework, which is usually used to compare two or more models. Another common model is the business model template, which compares the business processes of an organization as compared with its competitors. There are also multidimensional templates available, especially for multi-specialty or geographically diverse organizations. A healthcare executive may consider looking at several templates when assembling the case for a specific initiative. These can be particularly valuable if the initiatives have a particular focus, such as increasing community health or reducing health care costs.

The simplest health SWOT analysis template includes a single list of the organization’s three key areas: Human Resources, Customer Care and Training, and Operations. The key idea here is to compare these in isolation, using metrics from each area to identify any significant relationship. This type of template could also be constructed to compare the performance of a company across all of its functions, using metrics from each area. Other possible templates for a SWOT analysis include a portfolio template that compares the performance of a company’s assets or business processes against its competitors; a technology portfolio template that compares the performance of a company’s technologies against its competitors; and a people’s portfolio template that compares the performance of a company’s people against its competitors. Health IT and SWOT analysis templates can also include a file format for data mining, which allows the user to “mine” for information using the data that has been analyzed, saving the time and effort of having to manually search for the same data.

Other possible applications include predicting how a company will perform over a designated period of time based on prior strategic plans, identifying strengths and weaknesses across business units, forecasting business growth, identifying future market opportunities, and identifying funding needs. Another potential use for this type of template is to create a SWOT scorecard to compare and contrast the performance of a company throughout its existence against its competitors. A scorecard is a tool used in business strategy planning. However, since this type of analysis is often beyond the expertise of most business owners, it can also help to explain why a company may be doing so poorly. As part of the analysis process, this type of template can provide the foundation for future strategic planning. As you can see, there are many ways that a business analysis template can be used successfully in today’s business environment.
